Cinematography

Image
Lighting in audio-visual media is sometimes considered as part of the cinematography and sometimes as part of the mise en scene, this is why we are starting with the lighting. There are two aspects of lighting we need to cover and these are the technical aspects of lighting. Where we look at how particular lighting effects are achieves by the cinematographer. And the analytical aspect of lighting where we look at the effects the lighting has and look for meaning within its use.   The main point of the 4 point lighting system is to stimulate "natural" light and to replicate the lighting of any given location. When you start to remove, add or play when the intensity of the lights then you get lighting that is created for a particular purpose. Low-Key Lighting  Eliminated fill light Much bigger contrast between light and dark Create mood/tension High Key Lighting Bright surrounding light Does not create emotion/tension Does highlight colours, especially bright ...

Representations - Subversion and Stereotypes

Image
Ellie is a main character in the survival-horror action series The Last of Us, especially Part II where she is the central playable protagonist. She lives in a kill-or-be-kill world and travels with her adoptive father, Joel across a dead-ridden America. Unlike other female characters in apocalypse media, she is in her teens and has to be as ruthless as any other character in the series which contrasts with female characters being the voice of reason to contrast with her testosterone-fueled male characters. Also, she is gay but this was not revealed in the main story so they allowed her to develop as her own character who turned out to be gay rather than develop as a gay character. In the fourth season of Dexter, the main villain was Arthur Mitchell - the Trinity Killer, an aged murderer in his sixties. The genius of Trinity is that he knows the stereotypes of elderly people and twists this to his advantage; publicly he acts benevolent and generous from his career as a school teacher...

Mise en Scene Assignment

Image
Mise en Scene Assignment These particular texts are from the superhero crime-drama, Daredevil. The scene shown here is from the finale of the third season so there is a great deal of build-up and tension prior to the showdown of the antagonist and protagonist. Regarding the characters, their costumes are misleading to the first-time viewer but speak volumes of their personality to those who watch the show and understand them. Matt Murdock, Daredevil, the hero is dressed completely in black with a red shirt underneath whilst Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin and the villain is in pure white as he is violently beaten. By looking at this scene the colours connotes that Fisk should be on the side of good and Murdock evil due to the association of black with evil and white innocence, but the contrast used by these colour is significant – throughout his ordeal across the season Murdock has been seen struggling with his inner darkness and violent needs hence the use of black and red whereas F...

Analysing Hawaii Five-Oh

At the beginning of Hawaii Five-Oh, there's an equilibrium set up: the main cast are all having a casual breakfast with one another and another is seen with her lover having a good time. Then we enter the confrontation; another main cast member - Chin-Ho Kelly is kidnapped by the brother of a criminal whom he arrested or killed for murdering his wife and is thrown in jail, disguised as a prisoner to be killed by a corrupt cop that Kelly previously arrested. Near the climax the conflict reaches resolution when Kelly is able to escape the prison with the help of his friends outside and is hinted at having a future romance with a nurse who assisted in his escape from prisoner. However, they do not resolve the story of a possible affair with a main character, instead it’s used as a cliffhanger for future stories to hook in permanent viewers. In other words, the characters breakfast is the equilibrium of the story where everything is in balance and no conflict has yet arisen; the disrup...
