Stereotyping Revision

Image
Mary-Jane Watson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film series embodies several negative stereotypes about women in media, especially in the superhero genre. Her entire role is the love interest to the main hero and there is no depth to her outside of that, other than she also dated his best friend and was engaged to another man in the sequel. She is kidnapped or in mortal danger in every film and her only response is to scream manically and wait to be saved by a male hero. She's basically fucking useless is what I'm saying. Sebastian Castellanos is the main protagonist of the horror-action video game series The Evil Within. He embodies the stereotype of the hard-broiled detective who keeps all of his emotions close to the chest and solves all of his problems through the use of violence. He  is unemotional and has a history of alcoholism, attributing to the action hero stereotype of being flawed yet valiant character. Despite the many horrors he faces within his own mind, he is...

Newspaper

Image
For the front page, the three news items that I picked were: Prince Charles breaking his wrist. A train crash kills 40 people and injures 270. A faulty zebra crossing near a children's school. I picked Prince Harry falling and breaking his wrist as the newsworthiest of all the stories because I know what people enjoy reading more than complete strangers who society says are better than them - those strangers getting humiliated, hurt and injured. They like to humanise people who are infamous so the reader can better sympathise and relate to them or so the majority can say "I'm not a prince but at least my hand isn't broken". And those who follow and respect The Royal Family will be happy to learn Charles is not fatally injured. The Swedish train crash was placed so the reader is intrigued enough to read onwards in the newspaper and it ends with the zebra crossing in a more lighthearted fluff piece to elevate the reader after they read such a terrible tra...

Music Video Analysis

Music Video 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7bHe--mp1g The genre is folk rock. This entirety of the music video takes place inside of an empty ballroom decorated with streams of light whilst the band, Mumford & Sons passionately play to the emptiness. The camera constantly shifts from facing the singers playing to being at the back of them. The setting gives the video a country feel which is supported by the instruments played such as a banjo and double bass and the dress sense of the singers which consists of a shirt and vest, what appears to be platoons and a floral shirt. This sets Mumford & Sons apart from the stereotypes of folk singers by incorporating rock into their sound, setting a faster and more powerful beat which is not associated with folk singers that play at a slower tempo. Their dress sense vastly separates them from most bands who attempt to appear very clean and sophisticated. The video is performance as it focuses solely on the band's ability to pl...

News Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-a0hzXon9I This is a BBC news real regarding transgender women in India and how they overcome the discrimination faced in their country which makes my story stand out because transgender people in most media do not receive as much coverage as other members of LGBT community especially in a notoriously anti-LGBT continent like India, something that attracts the majority of viewers who do live in a tolerant and accepting society and watch news reals to sympathise with such people's plights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w60i18O-pA This is a BBC news real regarding International Men's Day and whether it is a necessity; like most newsreels this one offers conflicting opinions by asking the public on whether International Men's Day is a necessity and therefore there's no one opinion on the subject as much as there is conflicting ideas on if it should exist or not based on logic and polls of the public; I believe it will attract men and...

Stereotypes in Soap Operas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9LiL4K_KtY A stereotype in this clip of a soap is the one Scottish character who is also a middle aged male is presented as a diminutive thug with chains and bruises on his face, selling drugs to a main character. This reinforces the less-known but still significant stereotype of Scottish people being vandals and bruisers who cannot have an honest living.
